Breast Milk vs. Formula

Mother’s milk is inherently equipped to meet the changing nutritional needs of your baby. Both formula and breast milk contain about 20 calories per ounce. Formula has a static amount of calories while breast milk changes in its calorie content throughout the day.

The Biological Design of Breast Milk

Breast milk is magical in its ability to adapt. It changes in fat content and includes bioactive factors such as immunoglobulins and biologically active substances that support an infant’s gut health, immunity, and brain development.

The Truth About Foremilk and Hindmilk

New mothers often worry about foremilk and hindmilk imbalance. Foremilk is the more watery milk that contains lactose and is more prominent in the beginning of the feeding. Hindmilk is thicker and creamier milk that is higher in fat and comes later in the feeding. The human breast “mixes” these two types of milk together to give a consistent amount of calories and nutrients throughout the feeding. The only exception is when a mother has an oversupply of breast milk. In this case, the baby may consume more foremilk than hindmilk.
